Getting back to the way it used to be...

March 31, 2016

Before college, I used to sit and write for hours. I spent my free time on AbsoluteWrite.com, which, at the time at least, was one of the best websites for a wannabe novelist like myself (and more successful authors, too, of course). I blogged pretty consistently about writing and life and the little stupidities that made it into my novel.

I even reviewed books. Now, I barely have time to read.

Today is a lot different. There are these things called "full time jobs" that I've become a slave to, because college cost money and so does the whole roof-over-head-food-in-fridge thing. Grad school is a sure but stressful future. It is almost too much to celebrate when one considers how much change is going to happen in the next five months. From the moment I wake up in the morning to the second I close my eyes, I feel like I'm racing to get my list of "high priority" tasks done.

Writing is not a high priority. The most basic elements of survival don't include it, so it gets bumped down to medium priority.

Putting it all together, then, brings me to the question: has time sped up? When? How? What happened to all the writing time, reading time? Finding the answer might help me figure out the solution. Sadly, I'm pretty sure the answer is that I'm an adult now and life just sucks like that. Next step? Figuring out how other adults do it.

I'm hoping I don't have to stop taking naps...
